Scared of spiders? Performance reviews? Speaking in public?

Love this post by Shawn Hunter: Destroy one fear, Change your life.

It suggests that if you can conquer one fear, you can develop a mindset that will help you with others and change your life.

Worth a read even if simply for the reinforcement that it is possible.

What will people say your legacy is?

The word LEGACY written in vintage letterpress type

“You don’t lead machines, you lead people. Unless you understand human nature, I don’t think you can lead.”

Just read the July 2015 Qantas in-flight magazine article about David Morrison (former Chief of Army) by Catherine Fox Leader or Manager

It’s an engaging read  about his approach to leadership.

In my view Morrison showed true leadership when he told sexist officers and soldiers to get out of the army in 2013. You’ve probably seen the YouTube clip. It’s been viewed over 1.6 million times.

His view is that leaders engage through 4 mechanisms: role modelling, communications and narratives, systems and processes and culture.

Worth your reading time on the flight.

How to change from school kid to adult

12 June 2015 by Anne Riches Leave a Comment

I just read this wonderful blogpost from Shawn Hunter.

It is the speech he gave to students completing school. In the USA it’s called a commencement address.

Shawn shares terrific insights and thoughts.

I took a lot from it. I wish someone had said these things to me much earlier in my life – especially the bit about thinking you can have anything you set your mind to.

Worth a read.

… her delivery was excellent! Certainly kept everyone’s attention. I like that it couched in the personal. Had an excellent overview of change management issues, but the emphasis on the personal side and the WIFM principle is heart warming. I feel a lot of literature focuses on the organisation as a mechanistic, non sentient being.

I like this TED talk on breaking a bad habit. It has a practical approach that I think could help.

When I was growing up and my mother wanted to "point out the error of my ways", I remember that she often prefaced her no doubt well-intentioned words of advice with: "Look at me when I'm talking to

I loved the almond theory and will start thinking about putting it to work in the office, not to mention with my hubby.

Thank you for the great breakfast with Anne this morning – lots of very interesting things to think about (like when I came home to a messy house with the tv still on and breakfast debris all over the kitchen and my almond fired up!!
